Telegram founder Pavel Durov says Gram Wallet is now ready, moving the company’s latest crypto push from a promised summer launch into an initial live rollout.
The distinction matters. Durov said on August 31 that Gram Wallet had become accessible to a “select group of users” and that access would be expanded gradually over the following couple of weeks. He did not say that every Telegram user already has the wallet, nor did he provide figures showing how many people have activated or funded one.
That makes the current position much narrower than the headline number attached to Telegram’s potential distribution. Durov says Telegram has more than one billion users, but wallet availability across that audience and actual wallet usage are two different things.
What Is Gram Wallet in Telegram?
Durov describes Gram Wallet as a native non-custodial cryptocurrency wallet built for Telegram.
In July, he said Telegram was preparing what he called the “largest rollout of a non-custodial crypto wallet in human history” and said a native Gram wallet would be brought to every Telegram app.
Non-custodial is the important part of that description. Rather than describing Gram Wallet as a conventional account where a centralized platform holds a user’s crypto, Durov has repeatedly positioned the product around self-custody.
His August update said the wallet was ready and framed the work as part of Telegram’s effort to make non-custodial wallets easier to use.
That is the product proposition Telegram is now testing with the first group of users: put a self-custodial crypto wallet inside an application people already use rather than requiring them to begin with a separate specialist wallet.
What Can Telegram Users Actually Do With Gram Wallet?
The clearest functionality Durov has publicly attached to Gram Wallet is crypto transactions.
When he announced the planned rollout in July, Durov said “instant zero-fee crypto transactions” for Telegram’s billion-plus user base were about to become possible.
That is Durov’s description of the product, rather than evidence that every type of transaction involving Gram Wallet will always carry no cost. His statements so far have not provided a detailed public fee schedule, transaction-by-transaction breakdown or full list of supported wallet functions.
The safer takeaway is therefore narrower: users included in the current rollout can access Telegram’s native non-custodial Gram Wallet, while Durov has promoted the finished product around instant, zero-fee crypto transactions.
Users who do not see Gram Wallet should not interpret the August 31 announcement as confirmation that something is wrong with their Telegram account. Durov explicitly said access initially covers a select group and is being expanded gradually.
He has not disclosed the size of that first group.
Is Gram Wallet Available to Every Telegram User?
Not yet, based on Durov’s latest statement.
The July announcement described the eventual ambition in much broader terms, saying the wallet would come to every Telegram app and referring to more than one billion potential users.
The August 31 launch post was more specific about the present tense: the wallet was accessible to a select group, with Durov saying the rollout would broaden over the following couple of weeks.
Those statements should not be collapsed into a claim that more than one billion people already have an active Gram Wallet.
Telegram’s audience establishes the potential distribution channel. It does not establish how many wallets have been activated, how many contain crypto or how many users are making transactions.
Durov has not published those adoption figures.
Why Did Durov Mention the Gram Wallet Smart Contract?
Durov also disclosed one technical detail with the rollout.
He said validators had approved the smart contract powering Gram Wallet and that the approval meant future wallet upgrades would not require what he described as “painful migrations.”
The significance of the statement is less about adding a new user-facing feature today and more about how Telegram expects the wallet to evolve.
According to Durov, the approved structure allows future upgrades without forcing users through complicated migrations each time the wallet changes.
Again, that is Durov’s characterization of the technical design. He did not publish a complete technical specification in the announcement.
The Rollout Is Real, but the Adoption Numbers Are Not Here Yet
The August announcement answers one question surrounding Gram Wallet: Durov says it has moved beyond the planned-launch stage and is now accessible to some users.
It does not yet answer the more important adoption questions.
There is no Durov-published figure for active Gram Wallet users, funded wallets, transaction volume or the percentage of Telegram’s audience that currently has access.
FinanceFeeds’ earlier Gram Wallet explainer covers some of the broader questions surrounding the product. The key point for the current rollout is simpler: Gram Wallet is live according to Durov, but it is still being distributed in stages.
For Telegram users, that means the billion-user story remains potential scale rather than measured adoption. The next meaningful update will be evidence that access has moved materially beyond the select group Durov identified on August 31.
