BlackRock Pushes to Integrate Tokenized Assets Into…

BlackRock is accelerating efforts to integrate tokenized financial assets into traditional banking and investment infrastructure, positioning blockchain technology as an extension of existing capital markets rather than a replacement for conventional finance. The world’s largest asset manager has expanded its tokenization activities throughout 2026, introducing blockchain-enabled money market fund share classes and supporting digital investment products that connect conventional securities with cryptocurrency networks. The strategy reflects BlackRock’s view that tokenization could improve settlement efficiency, broaden investment access and allow financial assets to move more easily between traditional institutions and digital platforms.

BlackRock reported approximately $15.49 trillion in assets under management at the end of September 2026, following $205 billion in third-quarter net inflows. Its scale gives the company’s tokenization initiatives significance beyond the cryptocurrency industry, particularly as banks, custodians and securities infrastructure providers explore blockchain-based settlement. However, the company has not announced a wholesale migration of its investment products onto public blockchains.

Tokenized Money Market Funds Connect Banks and Blockchain Networks

One of BlackRock’s most significant initiatives came on August 4, when it introduced tokenized access to selected European money market funds. The launch uses JPMorgan’s Kinexys asset tokenization platform to create blockchain-based representations of existing fund shares on Ethereum. The service covers selected share classes denominated in sterling, euros and US dollars, providing eligible institutional investors with digital access to established investment products. BlackRock said the initiative introduced tokenized functionality to money market funds representing a combined $311 billion in assets across 15 markets. That figure represents the underlying funds’ combined assets, not $311 billion of newly issued blockchain tokens.

The arrangement demonstrates how tokenization can operate within existing regulatory and custody structures while potentially improving collateral mobility and transaction processing. BlackRock has also expanded its tokenized investment offering through partnerships involving Ondo Finance. In September, Ondo introduced blockchain-based versions of BlackRock model portfolios containing combinations of conventional exchange-traded funds and other investment exposures. These products illustrate growing interest in making diversified investment strategies accessible through digital wallets. Nevertheless, token holders’ legal rights, redemption mechanisms and underlying ownership arrangements can differ from those associated with directly holding conventional securities.

BlackRock Sees Tokenization as a Bridge Between Financial Systems

BlackRock Chairman and Chief Executive Larry Fink has repeatedly described tokenization as an important development in financial market infrastructure. In his 2026 annual shareholder letter, Fink argued that traditional financial institutions and blockchain-based platforms should become more interoperable. He called for regulatory frameworks that accommodate tokenized securities while maintaining investor protections, counterparty safeguards and financial crime controls. BlackRock’s strategy also includes managing reserves for stablecoin issuers and offering cryptocurrency exchange-traded products. During its 2026 annual shareholder meeting, Fink described a three-part approach encompassing connections between traditional and decentralized markets, stablecoin reserve management and tokenization of longer-term investment products.

The company has also identified opportunities to connect digital assets with artificial intelligence-driven payment systems. However, significant obstacles remain before tokenized securities can operate seamlessly across banks, brokerages and public blockchains. These include differing regulatory requirements, cybersecurity risks, custody arrangements, limited secondary-market liquidity and the challenge of integrating continuous blockchain settlement with conventional financial operations. Tokenization also does not eliminate the underlying market or credit risks associated with an investment. For BlackRock, the immediate opportunity lies in modernizing how existing financial products are distributed, recorded and transferred. The longer-term ambition is a financial system in which conventional assets and blockchain-based instruments can operate through increasingly connected infrastructure.
