UAE’s Largest Airline Emirates Begins Accepting Crypto…

Emirates has officially begun accepting cryptocurrency payments for flight bookings, becoming the largest airline in the United Arab Emirates and the first major Gulf carrier to integrate digital asset payments into its booking platform.

The airline has partnered with Crypto.com to enable payments through Crypto.com Pay on both its website and mobile application. The new payment option is currently available to eligible UAE residents with Crypto.com accounts booking flights priced in United Arab Emirates dirhams (AED). Although customers pay using cryptocurrencies held in their Crypto.com wallets, Emirates does not receive Bitcoin, Ether or other digital assets directly. Instead, Crypto.com converts the payment into AED before settlement, ensuring the airline continues to receive fiat currency while complying with the UAE’s financial regulations.

The launch follows a memorandum of understanding signed earlier this month between Emirates and Crypto.com to explore digital payment solutions. The rollout reflects Dubai’s broader strategy of becoming a global hub for blockchain technology and digital finance while expanding cashless payment options for residents and visitors.

Crypto Payments Arrive Through a Regulated Framework

The integration operates within the regulatory framework established by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE). Crypto.com processes customer payments through its licensed stored-value infrastructure, converting digital assets into dirhams before funds reach Emirates. This means the airline avoids direct exposure to cryptocurrency price volatility while customers gain the flexibility to spend digital assets for travel.

Because settlement occurs entirely in AED, the system functions similarly to traditional card payment processing from the airline’s perspective. Crypto.com manages the cryptocurrency conversion and assumes responsibility for the digital asset transaction before remitting fiat funds to Emirates. The current rollout is limited to UAE residents meeting Crypto.com’s eligibility requirements. International passengers without qualifying Crypto.com accounts cannot yet use the service, making the launch more targeted than a global crypto payment rollout.

Aviation Industry Continues Digital Asset Adoption

Emirates’ move represents another milestone in the aviation sector’s gradual embrace of blockchain-based payment technologies. While several smaller airlines have experimented with cryptocurrency payments in recent years, few global network carriers have implemented regulated payment infrastructure at this scale. Emirates carried 53.2 million passengers during its last financial year and serves more than 150 destinations worldwide, making it one of the world’s largest international airlines.

The announcement also follows similar initiatives elsewhere in the UAE. Air Arabia began accepting payments using the country’s AE Coin stablecoin, while Etihad Airways has previously indicated it is evaluating cryptocurrency payment options. For the crypto industry, the partnership provides another example of digital assets moving beyond investment into everyday commerce. Rather than holding cryptocurrencies solely for speculation, users can increasingly spend them through regulated payment providers that convert digital assets into local currency behind the scenes.

Although the current launch is geographically limited, Emirates’ adoption of Crypto.com Pay demonstrates how established global companies are integrating blockchain-based payment infrastructure without fundamentally changing their treasury or accounting models. If customer demand proves strong, the partnership could pave the way for broader international expansion of crypto payment options across the airline’s global network.
