MoonPay Wired ChatGPT and Grok Into Crypto Payments in Two…

MoonPay is expanding its effort to turn artificial-intelligence assistants into financial interfaces, bringing its PayBox payment infrastructure to Grok after previously launching support for ChatGPT and Claude.

The fintech company announced the Grok integration on August 31, saying users can now initiate crypto trades, move assets between blockchains and make online purchases using natural-language instructions from within an AI conversation.

MoonPay says integrating PayBox with Grok took its team approximately two days, illustrating how quickly payment functionality can be attached to AI assistants through standardized connector infrastructure. PayBox initially launched on July 29 with support for ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.

The product does not make ChatGPT or Grok custodians of users’ money. Instead, PayBox acts as a separate payment vault connecting the AI to a user’s self-custodial wallets, cards and credentials.

AI Prompts Can Prepare Real Transactions

Once connected, users can describe transactions conversationally. MoonPay gives examples including converting $100 into PayPal’s PYUSD stablecoin, swapping PYUSD for SOL, bridging assets onto Robinhood Chain and supplying USDC to the Kamino lending protocol.

PayBox can also support conventional purchases such as flights, restaurant bookings and online shopping. The AI interprets the request and prepares the transaction, but MoonPay says users approve transactions with a passkey before funds move.

Users can also establish limits governing what their AI agent is permitted to do. Wallet security is separated from the language model itself. MoonPay says PayBox protects private keys using threshold cryptography and secure enclaves, meaning neither MoonPay nor the connected AI possesses a complete wallet key capable of independently signing transactions.

The underlying key-management technology comes partly from Sodot, the wallet infrastructure company MoonPay acquired earlier in 2026. PayBox currently supports Solana alongside EVM-compatible networks including Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, Hyperliquid, Tempo and Robinhood Chain. MoonPay has separately integrated Kamino, enabling supported users to lend, borrow and earn yield through conversational instructions.

Geographic restrictions still apply. For example, MoonPay says the Kamino functionality is unavailable in the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and Australia.

Payments Become a New Layer for AI Assistants

PayBox relies heavily on the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, an open standard that allows AI applications to connect with external tools and services. That architecture explains how MoonPay can extend transaction functionality across multiple AI platforms without rebuilding an entirely separate payments system for each assistant.

Grok users must add and authorize PayBox as a custom connector rather than receiving a wallet automatically inside Grok. The distinction is significant. MoonPay is effectively building a financial permission layer that sits between an AI agent and the external services where transactions ultimately occur.

It also supports x402, a crypto-native internet payment protocol that allows software agents to respond programmatically when an online resource requires payment. That creates the possibility of AI agents paying directly for APIs, data, computing resources and other machine-accessible services without navigating conventional checkout pages.

MoonPay’s broader MoonAgents infrastructure already provides 54 crypto tools across 17 capabilities, including wallets, swaps, bridges, transfers, recurring purchases, market data and fiat on- and off-ramps. The company therefore appears to be positioning itself less as an individual consumer application and more as the financial infrastructure connecting AI agents to money.

That market is becoming increasingly competitive as payments companies, crypto exchanges and card networks experiment with agent-initiated commerce. The critical issue will be authorization. Giving an AI assistant the ability to recommend a transaction is fundamentally different from giving it authority to move money.

MoonPay’s architecture attempts to separate those functions through self-custody, spending permissions, cryptographic key protection and explicit approvals. The fact that its Grok integration could reportedly be completed in roughly two days nevertheless demonstrates how quickly the underlying distribution model is changing.

If standardized AI connectors become widespread, adding payments, trading or DeFi functionality to a conversational assistant may increasingly resemble connecting an API rather than building an entirely new financial application.
