Crypto Security Losses Top $1 Billion in H1 2026 as…

The cryptocurrency industry lost more than $1 billion to security incidents during the first half of 2026, marking one of the costliest six-month periods on record and the highest number of individual attacks ever documented.

According to blockchain security firm CertiK, crypto projects and users suffered approximately $1.05 billion in confirmed losses across 344 separate security incidents between January and June. While the total value stolen was lower than the record losses seen during the same period in 2025, the number of successful attacks reached a new all-time high, reflecting an increasingly fragmented threat landscape.The report found that phishing campaigns emerged as the largest single cause of financial losses, surpassing smart contract exploits and private key compromises. Attackers increasingly targeted individual users through social engineering rather than attempting to exploit vulnerabilities in blockchain protocols themselves. Ethereum remained the most heavily targeted blockchain due to its dominant decentralized finance ecosystem and large concentration of digital assets, although attacks affected projects across multiple networks.

The findings underscore a shift in crypto security risks. While protocol-level vulnerabilities continue to result in major exploits, attackers are increasingly finding success by manipulating users into voluntarily revealing wallet credentials, approving malicious transactions or downloading compromised software.

Phishing Replaces Smart Contract Exploits as Biggest Threat

CertiK identified phishing attacks as the most expensive attack vector during the first half of the year, accounting for hundreds of millions of dollars in stolen assets. Many campaigns relied on increasingly sophisticated impersonation techniques, including fake Zoom and Microsoft Teams meetings, compromised social media accounts, malicious browser extensions and counterfeit websites designed to mimic legitimate crypto platforms. Private key compromises and access-control failures also remained among the largest sources of losses, while smart contract vulnerabilities continued affecting decentralized finance protocols, cross-chain bridges and token launch platforms.

Several of the year’s largest individual incidents involved bridge infrastructure and oracle manipulation rather than flaws in blockchain consensus mechanisms, highlighting the growing complexity of decentralized financial infrastructure. Despite the rising number of attacks, CertiK noted that approximately $187 million worth of stolen funds were frozen, recovered or voluntarily returned during the first six months of the year, reducing net realized losses.

Industry Faces Growing Security Challenge

The record number of incidents reflects the expanding size of the cryptocurrency ecosystem rather than a single systemic weakness. As decentralized finance, tokenized assets, stablecoins and blockchain gaming continue attracting new users, attackers have gained more opportunities to exploit operational mistakes, weak security practices and increasingly interconnected infrastructure.

Security researchers argue that improving wallet protections, hardware authentication, transaction simulation tools and real-time monitoring will become increasingly important as attacks continue evolving. The report also highlights a broader trend: crypto security is no longer defined solely by smart contract auditing. Human behavior, phishing resistance, access management and operational security have become equally important components of protecting digital assets.

While total losses remained below the extraordinary figures recorded following several high-profile exploits in previous years, surpassing the $1 billion mark in just six months demonstrates that cybersecurity remains one of the industry’s most significant challenges. With attack methods becoming more sophisticated and incidents more frequent, blockchain security firms expect both institutional investors and retail users to place greater emphasis on operational resilience alongside technological innovation as digital asset adoption continues to expand.
