Multicoin Names HYPE Its Largest Hedge Fund Position as It…

Multicoin Capital has identified Hyperliquid’s HYPE token as the largest holding in its cryptocurrency hedge fund, reaffirming its commitment to digital assets as other venture investors expand into artificial intelligence and robotics. Spencer Applebaum, a general partner and co-head of venture investments at Multicoin, confirmed the position in comments reported on October 19, 2026. The investment firm manages approximately $2.7 billion in assets across its strategies, although it has not disclosed the dollar value or percentage weighting of its HYPE holdings.

Applebaum said Multicoin accumulated the token through public-market purchases and generally approaches liquid cryptocurrency investments with a multiyear holding horizon. The disclosure follows months of research and investment activity surrounding Hyperliquid, the blockchain-based derivatives trading platform whose native token has become a significant institutional cryptocurrency investment. Multicoin’s decision also highlights diverging strategies among digital asset investment firms as artificial intelligence attracts increasing venture capital.

HYPE Becomes Multicoin’s Largest Liquid-Fund Investment

Multicoin first publicly outlined its substantial HYPE exposure in a June 25 research report examining Hyperliquid’s valuation and long-term business prospects. At the time, the firm said it had begun accumulating HYPE earlier in 2026 and described the token as one of its largest liquid-fund positions. Applebaum’s latest comments confirm that HYPE has since become the fund’s largest holding. Multicoin’s investment thesis centers on Hyperliquid’s position in decentralized derivatives trading and the relationship between platform activity and token economics. Unlike cryptocurrency projects whose valuations depend primarily on future adoption expectations, Hyperliquid operates an established trading business with observable transaction volumes and fee generation.

The platform’s token buyback mechanism provides a potential connection between trading activity and HYPE demand, although token prices remain exposed to market volatility and changing expectations. Multicoin’s June valuation analysis projected substantial upside under assumptions involving continued trading growth, revenue generation and market-share expansion. Those projections represent the firm’s investment expectations rather than guaranteed outcomes. The company has also faced scrutiny over reported HYPE transfers to Coinbase Prime during September. However, transfers to a trading or custody platform do not independently establish that tokens were sold.

Multicoin Rejects Broader AI Pivot Despite Industry Shift

Applebaum said Multicoin intends to maintain its specialization in cryptocurrency rather than pursue standalone artificial intelligence or robotics investments. The position contrasts with competitors including Paradigm, which has expanded its investment mandate beyond blockchain infrastructure. Multicoin nevertheless remains open to projects connecting cryptocurrency networks with practical AI applications. In September, the firm announced an investment in Grass through both its hedge fund and venture fund. Grass operates a decentralized bandwidth network supporting the collection and processing of publicly available web data used by artificial intelligence developers.

The investment illustrates Multicoin’s distinction between blockchain infrastructure serving AI-related demand and companies focused exclusively on artificial intelligence. The firm is also deploying its $422 million venture fund, raised in 2022, more gradually than originally anticipated. Applebaum explained that smaller startup financing rounds have made deploying substantial amounts of venture capital more difficult. He cited seed rounds in 2023 averaging approximately $3 million at post-money valuations near $30 million, limiting how quickly a large fund could invest without taking unusually concentrated positions. The approach reflects Multicoin’s preference for maintaining investment discipline rather than expanding into unrelated sectors solely to deploy capital.

For investors, the HYPE disclosure provides insight into the firm’s conviction in decentralized financial infrastructure. However, without detailed portfolio allocations, it remains impossible to determine the precise financial exposure or concentration risk associated with its largest holding.
