Evening digest: Anthropic eyes mid November IPO, gold and oil prices jump

Anthropic is considering launching its initial public offering as soon as mid-November, while gold prices edged higher after softer US inflation data reduced expectations for an October Federal Reserve rate hike.

Oil prices rose sharply amid concerns over fuel supplies and escalating tensions in the Middle East, while Treasury yields eased after reaching multi-decade highs.

Anthropic eyes November listing at up to $2 trillion

Anthropic is considering launching its IPO as early as mid-November, potentially allowing the artificial intelligence model maker to begin trading before the Thanksgiving holiday, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The company could begin formal IPO marketing as early as the week of Nov. 9. Anthropic is still expected to go public by the end of the year, although the timeline could change.

Prospective investors reportedly value the company at between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion. Anthropic is also expected to match or exceed the size of SpaceX’s IPO, according to previous Bloomberg reporting.

The potential listing comes amid increased competition from OpenAI and scrutiny of AI safety.

Anthropic reported a net loss of almost $42 billion in 2025, compared with about $8.3 billion in 2024. Revenue rose to roughly $4.6 billion from $386 million.

More than $34 billion of the 2025 net loss came from changes in the fair value of Anthropic’s liabilities.

Gold rises as October Fed hike bets fall to 31%

Spot gold rose 0.49% to $4,176.16 an ounce, while US gold futures for December delivery settled 0.54% higher at $4,209.20. Gold prices had fallen more than 6% in September.

US inflation increased less than expected in August, while earlier price pressures were revised lower.

The data reduced the market-implied probability of an October Fed rate hike to 31%, from 45% before the release and 69% a week earlier.

Lower rate expectations supported gold, although gains were limited by higher Treasury yields and a stronger dollar.

Investors are now awaiting the September nonfarm payrolls report for further clues on monetary policy.

HSBC lowered its average gold price forecasts for 2026 and 2027 to $4,490 and $4,825 an ounce, respectively, while saying the metal could be nearing a bottom.

Brent tops $102

Oil prices jumped more than 4% a barrel as concerns over global fuel supplies intensified.

December Brent futures settled at $102.46 a barrel, up 4.54%, while US West Texas Intermediate futures ended at $93.17, up 3.04%.

China suspended oil products exports, adding pressure to fuel markets already affected by supply disruptions.

Russia has also extended a diesel export ban through October, while damage to refinery infrastructure in the Gulf and Russia has contributed to tight refined-product supplies.

The US was also reportedly sending a third aircraft carrier and up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East as President Donald Trump weighed his options on Iran.

The European Union’s energy taskforce is due to discuss a potential release of diesel stockpiles. Saudi Arabia has resumed oil tanker loadings from Yanbu after restarting its East-West Pipeline.

US 10-year yield eases after hitting a 24-year high

US Treasury yields pulled back after longer-dated rates reached their highest levels in more than two decades.

The 10-year Treasury yield briefly exceeded a level last seen in April 2002 before easing more than four basis points to 5.234%.

The 30-year Treasury yield also reached a 24-year high before falling to 5.60%.

Higher oil prices and persistent inflation have contributed to volatility in longer-dated yields.

Investors are also assessing government borrowing requirements and fiscal deficits across major economies.

Japan’s 10-year yield reached 3.126%, its highest level since the mid-1990s, while Germany’s 10-year yield topped 3.6%, its highest since 2008.

France, Italy and the UK also recorded higher 10-year yields during the session before some rates eased.
