U.S.-listed crypto exchange-traded funds ended Friday, August 28 with a pronounced split between Bitcoin and the rest of the digital-asset market, as investors withdrew $201.9 million from spot Bitcoin ETFs while continuing to allocate capital to Ether, Solana, XRP and Hyperliquid products.
Bitcoin’s reversal was particularly notable after nine consecutive positive sessions. BlackRock’s IBIT recorded $33.4 million of outflows, while ARK 21Shares’ ARKB suffered the day’s largest redemption at $114.9 million. Bitwise’s BITB lost another $49.7 million and VanEck’s HODL recorded $13.2 million of withdrawals.
Morgan Stanley’s MSBT was the only Bitcoin product to record a meaningful inflow, adding $9.3 million. The $201.9 million aggregate outflow followed four consecutive sessions of substantial buying: $337.6 million on Monday, $314.3 million Tuesday, $232.2 million Wednesday and $242.3 million Thursday.
Ether and Altcoin Funds Absorb Fresh Capital
Ether ETFs moved in the opposite direction, recording $102.1 million of net inflows on Friday and extending their positive streak to 11 trading sessions. BlackRock’s ETHA led with $83.8 million, while Bitwise’s ETHB added $42.6 million. Fidelity’s FETH partially offset those purchases with $24.3 million of withdrawals.
Cumulative net inflows into U.S. spot Ether ETFs reached approximately $13 billion following Friday’s session. Solana products also remained positive. A comprehensive SolanaFloor tracker covering nine U.S. products recorded $18.08 million of net inflows, led by Bitwise’s BSOL at $11.2 million and Grayscale’s GSOL at $3.53 million.
VanEck’s VSOL added $1.73 million, 21Shares’ SOEZ attracted approximately $894,000 and QSOL added roughly $729,000. Some flow trackers reported a lower $17.3 million Solana total because they did not include QSOL in their Friday calculation. The difference therefore reflects product coverage rather than conflicting fund-level flows. XRP ETFs recorded approximately $26.2 million of net inflows according to SoSoValue-based data, extending their inflow streak to nine sessions.
The result brought XRP ETF inflows for the week to approximately $110.5 million, the strongest weekly performance since December 2025. Hyperliquid ETFs attracted another $4.5 million, entirely through Bitwise’s BHYP. THYP and HYPG recorded no net flows.
Bitcoin’s Nine-Day Buying Streak Ends
Friday’s Bitcoin reversal stands out because institutional demand had been one of the principal drivers of crypto’s August recovery.
Bitcoin climbed above $80,000 during the week after trading below $70,000 earlier in August, supported by improving regulatory sentiment, concerns over dollar debasement and renewed demand through spot ETFs.
The nine-session inflow streak added roughly $2.8 billion to Bitcoin funds before Friday’s reversal. Yet Friday’s broader ETF data do not indicate investors abandoned crypto exposure altogether. Using the broader Solana and XRP datasets, approximately $151 million flowed into ETH, SOL, XRP and HYPE products, offsetting most of Bitcoin’s $201.9 million withdrawal.
That leaves the five major categories with a combined net outflow of approximately $51 million for the session. The composition is arguably more important than the aggregate number. On Thursday, all five categories had been positive: Bitcoin attracted $242.3 million, Ether approximately $225.8 million to $235 million depending on provider coverage, Solana $60.9 million, XRP $18.5 million and HYPE $24.4 million.
Friday therefore marked a sharp deterioration in Bitcoin demand while altcoin-linked products continued attracting capital. Bitcoin also weakened into the weekend, falling below $78,000 after reaching an intraday high above $81,000 on Friday. One session of withdrawals does not establish a sustained reversal, particularly after nine consecutive positive Bitcoin ETF sessions.
But the August 28 flows show institutional demand becoming considerably more selective. Instead of uniformly reducing digital-asset exposure as Bitcoin retreated, ETF investors withdrew capital from Bitcoin while continuing to allocate more than $150 million to Ether and selected altcoin products.
Whether that divergence persists into September will determine whether Friday represented simple Bitcoin profit-taking or the beginning of a broader institutional rotation toward alternative crypto assets.
