What Is Franklin Templeton Offering Through HashKey?
Franklin Templeton has partnered with Hong Kong-based HashKey Exchange to distribute a tokenized U.S. government money market fund, extending the asset manager’s digital asset strategy in Asia as demand for tokenized real-world assets continues to grow.
HashKey launched the Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Liquidity Fund through its Earn channel on Monday. The product gives eligible investors access to a tokenized fund that invests primarily in U.S. government money market instruments and U.S. dollar cash assets.
Access is restricted to professional investors and the product is not available to the general public in Hong Kong. The structure combines a traditional low-risk investment strategy with blockchain-based ownership and distribution, allowing professional clients to gain exposure through a digital asset platform rather than a conventional fund channel.
The partnership also gives Franklin Templeton another route into Asia’s institutional crypto market. HashKey operates across several jurisdictions, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Dubai and Bermuda, providing a potential distribution network for additional tokenized products.
“We look forward to deepening this partnership by expanding beyond tokenized money market funds into other tokenized products over time, leveraging HashKey’s multi-jurisdictional platform spanning Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Dubai and Bermuda,” said Chetan Karkhanis, Franklin Templeton’s SVP of digital assets client engagement.
Why Are Money Market Funds Moving On-Chain?
Tokenized money market funds have become one of the largest segments of real-world asset tokenization because they combine blockchain settlement with exposure to conventional assets such as U.S. Treasury securities and cash.
For investors, the appeal is less about replacing the underlying investment and more about changing how ownership is recorded and transferred. Tokenization can allow fund interests to interact with digital asset infrastructure, potentially making them easier to use alongside custody, trading and settlement systems built around blockchain networks.
U.S. government securities are particularly suited to the model because they already serve as a core source of collateral and liquidity in traditional financial markets. Tokenized versions can extend those characteristics into digital asset markets while providing investors with exposure to government-backed debt rather than volatile cryptocurrencies.
The approach has also become increasingly relevant as crypto companies, exchanges and institutional investors seek yield-bearing alternatives to holding idle U.S. dollar balances or non-yielding stablecoins.
Investor Takeaway
The HashKey launch shows tokenization moving beyond experiments and into established distribution channels. The important question is whether professional investors begin treating tokenized Treasury funds as routine cash-management products rather than a separate crypto allocation.
How Important Is Asia To Franklin Templeton’s Tokenization Strategy?
Franklin Templeton has been expanding its tokenization business in Asia as financial centers including Hong Kong and Singapore develop rules for blockchain-based financial products.
In November 2025, the asset manager introduced the Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund in Hong Kong, becoming the first tokenized money market fund launched under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Fintech 2030 initiative.
The latest HashKey arrangement adds distribution rather than simply introducing another blockchain-based fund. That distinction matters because tokenization can only gain institutional relevance if investors have regulated venues through which they can access, hold and eventually use the products.
HashKey’s presence across multiple financial centers could also allow the partnership to extend beyond Hong Kong. Franklin Templeton has already indicated that the relationship could cover other tokenized assets over time, suggesting money market funds may serve as an entry point rather than the final product category.
How Large Is The Tokenized RWA Market?
The wider real-world asset tokenization market reached about $38.2 billion as of Aug. 23, up from $20.6 billion a year earlier. That represents growth of roughly 85% in 12 months as asset managers, crypto companies and financial institutions increased the amount of traditional financial assets represented on blockchain networks.
Tokenized U.S. Treasury debt accounted for about $15.6 billion of the total, making government securities one of the largest components of the market. The concentration reflects strong demand for assets that combine dollar exposure, relatively low credit risk and interest income.
For platforms such as HashKey, distributing tokenized funds also widens the range of products available beyond cryptocurrency trading. Professional clients can potentially use the same digital infrastructure to hold crypto assets, stablecoins and tokenized conventional investments.
Franklin Templeton’s latest move therefore adds to competition over who controls the distribution layer for tokenized finance. Asset managers bring regulated investment products, while exchanges and digital asset platforms provide the infrastructure and customer relationships needed to place those products in front of investors.
If tokenized Treasury funds continue growing at the current pace, partnerships between traditional asset managers and regulated crypto platforms could become an increasingly common route for institutional investors entering on-chain markets.
